Other schools within the Poway Unified district have been around for decades; they draw a large community of supportive families, sports fans, and local businesses to campus events. However, to some degree, this communal strength has been drawn from student tragedies, many linked to abuse of drugs and alcohol.
Over the course of the last year, an idea has slowly evolved within Matt Dalton’s (12) head to create an event to unite the Del Norte community—and instead of tragic events, Dalton envisions a carnival centered around drug and alcohol prevention that will bring the community together in a different way.
To paint a better picture, consider an elementary school carnival: games, food vendors, ticket booths, cake walks. The carnival Dalton envisions is similar to this, but with a distinct purpose. Dalton intends to create the carnival not only to bring the 4S Ranch community together to establish a tradition, but also to draw attention to an important cause—a portion of the profits from the carnival will benefit Del Norte Student Services, a group that works incessantly to raise drug and alcohol awareness.
The Del Norte Carnival is tentatively scheduled for February 9, 2013.
